Ebook About
The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens is Jerry Torre’s touching and at times haunting memoir about his teenage days as caretaker of Grey Gardens, the now-celebrated mansion chronicled in the iconic documentary Grey Gardens and two feature-length films. The book is a behind-the-scenes look at “Big Edie” and “Little Edie” and their bizarre and reclusive life of squalor amidst the tremendous wealth of East Hampton, the family bond that developed between Jerry and them, and the afternoon everything was turned upside down forever with the arrival of documentary filmmakers Albert and David Maysles. What begins as a teenager coming upon what he assumed was an old, abandoned house takes on new dimensions when suddenly Edie appeared on the porch draped in a shower curtain with an apron tied around her head. “You must be the Marble Faun,” she told the stunned Jerry. Rather than chasing him away as he at first feared, she invited Jerry to meet her mother upstairs. So begins a strange and unusually close friendship with the two women as Jerry takes on the task of volunteer gardener of their estate, often sleeping nights in their living room and staying out of the way of mother-daughter arguments. The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens is Jerry’s look back on the filming of Grey Gardens but also how the notoriety the movie achieved changed his life along with the Beales’s as their private world was shared with audiences everywhere.

Book The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens: A Memoir of the Beales, the Maysles Brothers, and Jacqueline Kennedy Review :

GREY GARDENS fans (and fanatics!) as well as newcomers to the Beales' saga will find lots to love in this fascinating memoir that reads, in many ways, like a fairy tale. A young boy is drawn to a spooky old house, where he meets two eccentric recluses, who initiate him into the ways of life, art, and culture -- proving that you don't have to leave the house to travel around the world. Jerry Torre tells his story in a heartfelt, sincere, and honest manner -- and his willingness to appear vulnerable and tell it like it is (and was) is remarkable and special. Both Big Edie and Little Edie are portrayed with affection and candor -- with many behind-the-scenes moments that shed new light what happened before, during, and after the Maysles Brothers shot GREY GARDENS. In this fairy tale, a boy sought a home and family -- and found them with mother Edith Bouvier Beale and sister Little Edie Beale on Long Island at Grey Gardens.
I think I first watched the documentary, Grey Gardens, about 20 years ago. And I think by that time it was already 25 years old. It was filmed in the 70s by the Maysles brothers, and we had a great video store here in New Hope that carried a lot of independent art films and documentaries. So when I started reading The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens I knew the book was about Jerry Torre's experience as a gardener at Grey Gardens, with Edith and Edie Beales. My brother also had a house in East Hampton not far from Grey Gardens so I was familiar with the local stories about Grey Gardens. However, I learned so much more by reading Jerry Torre's account of what it was really like at Grey Gardens. I also learned more about what happened after the documentary and after Edith Beale passed away. It didn't know anything about that and it was interesting to read. Most of all, Torre confirms what I already expected: that Edith and Edie Beale were basically good, decent people who learned to live with their circumstances. There's also one more thing I learned that I didn't know prior to reading The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens. Jerry Torre was gay, and he talks about how he came out, and what life was like for a young gay man in the 70s. It's not a gay book and the focus is not on him being gay, but he does work the topic in nicely. In short, if you want to read more about Grey Gardens that you most likely don't know, you'll enjoy The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens. It's' nicely written, it shows some of the conflict Torre experienced as well as the love and sense of family he found at Grey Gardens. I loved it and I'm giving it all the stars I can.
